When you want to sell something to the most massive audience in the world… where would you go?
Amazon, of course! That’s what I did, and it made me a millionaire by age 26. I was even able to sell my KDP business for almost $1M – in only 5 years.
Since its inception 25 years ago, Amazon has grown to become the top ecommerce platform in the country.
In fact, each month more than 197 million people around the world shop on Amazon. That's bigger than some countries!
A whopping 74% of consumers go to Amazon when they’re ready to buy a product. By comparison, only 10% of consumers go to search engines, just 5% visit brand websites – and retailer websites only get 4%, with social media lagging at 1%. (Feedvisor, 2019)
So it stands to reason that if you wanted to sell anything on an ecommerce platform… you’d want to do it on Amazon.
Let’s compare two ways to piggyback on the outrageous market size of Amazon… and generate profits, without having a brick & mortar store, along with all the other headaches that go along with that business model.
The first one is the popular, well-known FBA (fulfillment by Amazon) model. And the second one is the lessor-known KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) model.
Amazon seller statistics show 9.6 million sellers (including inactive sellers) are using the platform.
Approximately 2.4 million sellers have a product listed for sale on Amazon. However, less than 10% of active sellers were able to generate over $100,000 in annual sales. (Marketplace Pulse, 2021)
Interestingly, 6,264 sellers join the eCommerce giant every day. (Marketplace Pulse, 2021)
Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) provides multi-channel order fulfillment services geared toward Amazon sales. It handles receiving, storage, pick and pack, shipping, customer service, refunds, and returns management for each order.
FBA is best for Amazon-based sellers, ecommerce retailers, and brick-and-mortar stores looking to venture into online selling. Its wide network of 185 warehouses creates efficient distribution for global sales.
Also, every FBA order is Prime eligible… representing 90 million subscribers in the US alone.
But the service’s complex pricing policy and high, fluctuating storage fees can result in surprise costs if you aren’t careful — so it’s important to understand FBA’s pricing structure and consider alternatives before signing up.
But it really depends on what you call success…
Let’s read that second bullet point above again. It says that less than 10% of active sellers were able to generate over $100,000 in annual sales.
The competition on Amazon FBA is outrageous, so if you're not in that top 10% of sellers, you're pretty much out of luck. Personally, I never liked those odds.
Let’s compare FBA to KDP… Kindle Direct Publishing
You may already know about KDP, but just in case… it’s Amazon's self-publishing platform that allows authors to sell their books to Amazon's massive audience.
With KDP, you avoid the hassle of going through a traditional publishing company – and you can create ebooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers all without any upfront costs or inventory orders.
Amazon is probably the most popular and largest place on the web for selling eBooks right now. In fact, Amazon's share of the eBook market is a whopping 68%.
Since Kindle Unlimited launched, Amazon said that KDP authors have earned more than $1.1 billion through the program, and more than 1,000 had royalties of $100,000 through KDP in 2019.
Clearly, there’s money to be made with KDP. And the beautiful thing about this piggyback ride on Amazon (as opposed to the FBA model), there’s…

No logistic nightmares
No competing with Amazon’s products
No fees
In fact, with Amazon’s KDP… they pay YOU! Amazon pays royalties to the authors of the books published on Amazon.
Once you write (or hire a ghostwriter to write) your books, you can sit back and enjoy a semi-passive income stream… IF you know HOW to do it right.
As in anything else you encounter online – you must be careful because there are a lot of wolves in sheep’s clothing out there.
In fact, I was one of those naive and gullible people and fell for a lot of BS – and lost at least $125,000 on my way to discovering KDP. And that included trying FBA, too.
I made all the mistakes anyone could possibly make, until I finally ‘cracked the code.’ It wasn’t easy… but nothing’s easy that is worthwhile.
